Mass Picnic

"How Many People Can you Cram Into a Gazebo?"

What a great day for a picnic. I had a lovely time. It was the fiirst event whihc I was able to sit back + enjoy. Kate Clayton bought a mini-bus load of people up from Southend, where Milika Militu has her project The Queensway Streams. The kids played frisbee, using the Art U Need Needs U frisbees - now available at the Northlands Cafe - and football. Clever Kate bought along champagne and a spread, and Sarah Ridge, Northlands Cafe, provided a wonderful spread too. It was a lot of fun. Thanks everyone who came.

Cracked It!!
Finally all my ideas have come together and make sense. This morning I got jotting a few ideas down in my notebook and suddenly it all seemed to come together.
I will be introducing a lot of Family Workshops to get families together and having fun, rather than the habit of dropping kids off somewhere that often happens.
I plan to put some poems and some pictures of the workshops in the menu, plus record the fun on the blog www.cafeart.blogspot.com

Sunday July 1st Poetry Corner - Family Workshop by then it would have been well advertised, I want to do a poetry workshop, and get some children and adults to stand up and say their poems. Then put the poems on the wall of the cafe at the alloted poetry corner.
I will also say that I am going to choose some poems to put in a menu for the cafe, also in the menu will be photographs of the activities we are going to do over the summer. E.g Puppet show, animation, a picnic.

Sunday July 15th Northlands Park Corner I will advertise that we will be having a group of professional speakers at the park, time place specified and to start the ball rolling I will choose the subject of 'How could we be better to our environment - what could we use rather than throw away.' I hope the rest of the talk will be of global concern too. I would invite children perhaps to stand and say their poems about how we could treat the planet better.

Summer Holidays Yay!
(where the programme becomes weekly and on a week day)
=======
Monday July 30th Puppet Family Workshop Stage 1 Nick's idea this. We can outline how we want this project to go, I'm relying on Nick to give me the rundown on what to do as he is doing a similiar project in his school. I will devise a storyline, it will incorporate some of the history I have gathered (200 years ago all the family drunk beer as the water was so dangerous to drink - think of the fun you could have with that one - my daughter said that the beer that the children drank was actually stronger than most beers you get today). I also want to incorporate some green issues in their somehow. Employing knowledge with fun.
====
Monday August 6th Puppet Family Workshop Stage 2 Getting on with the making of the puppets, scenery, props. I guess me and Nick will have to make the box thing that the puppet show takes place in. Perhaps allocating people to puppets, we could have times where two people at a time go into the box and play their parts.
=====
Monday August 13th Puppet Family Workshop Stage 3 The last final preparations then the show!
====
Monday August 20th Animation Family Workshop I'm still waiting on Jack to get back to me on this, but from when I brought Greg there and joined in I know he could cater for many ages and they could have a lot of fun.
====
Monday Aug 27th Picnic in the Park The plan is a group has formed who have got to know each other a bit more by now and would look forward to a picnic together, could say bring your own colouring pencils and paper, bring your own musical instruments and we could have some music. Perhaps I could get a Story Teller to come and tell stories, also a musician or a group of musicians.
====
Sunday September 2nd Painting in the Park I'm hoping to get lots of ideas from the artists at the cafe here, this one is very open ended. Perhaps arranging an arts materials treasure hunt - find the pack of water colours or coloured pencils - incorporating a map of the area where the treasure is deposited, maps given out to leading adult of different groups.
Perhaps clues will be given on the map and you have to find the key place then it will say ten steps forward and 5 to the side to find this treasure.
=====
Sunday Sept 16th Doggy Derby Not only could we have 'the best bling' competition, or other dog competitions we could think of things the dogs would dearly love to do.
Also excercise incorporated here, dog races - fairly long distances - obviously with humans attached to the lead so that they don't go racing around the park by themselves.
Perhaps relays - that would be fun with the dogs wanting to sniff each other.
=====
Sunday Sept 30th Art Walk + Collage Workshop We could all go around Nevendon bushes, picking up things to draw or use in the final collage, we could also spend a bit of time drawing what we see - interesting trees or fungi. When we go back to the cafe will have a workshop collaborating all our pictures and things we've picked up into a collage. I'm sure I'll be given ideas towards this too.
This will be the final workshop and I hope to have done the menus by then for the families and the cafe.
I will leave Parkour to try and get their own grant and when they want to come down will put a poster for them, what bothers me is the kids will be using the play things more, perhaps I could encourage the families at the park to join in an activity for younger members so it should coincide with something like painting in the park or the picnic.

Art Drop

Hi Andrea

I am back from windswept Basildon :o)

Wow it was windy! One little painting ended up in the
lake with the ducks, lol.
I gave away 30 mini art works - some I gave away
directly to suspicious people who were giving me funny
looks. Actually I was impressed with how open people
became - in London they run when you approach them
directly.
All of the ones I taped to signs, tables, etc were
gone next time I looked (well the obvious ones anyway,
I did not check on them all).
I have a nice photo of one bloke who really liked the
idea, Dagenham Dave, a fisherman who spends a lot of
time in the park both alone and with his grandchildren
who live opposite. I can forward that to you if it
will help (not sure how or if you are documenting
events - I have a number of photos of the art in situ
too). I will do a piece about it with the photos on
the a2a site too.

All in all a pretty good day, i chatted to some nice
people :o) I hope you and your children had a lovely
mother's day!

sal x

Art U Need Launch

I have uploaded the images one by one this time to get them in order, though they may still be back to front!
We had a cracking time. I travelled down from Norwich with Catherine Butcher, commissions east, and Jules Devonshire, Outpost + now Ipswich Gallery. Met up with my "team" Arcadian (Chris Lowthorpe, Darren Leader, Marie Claire Isaaman + photographer Andi Sapey ) + Joanna Pocaock at Fenchurch Street Station. Handed out my "U" badges. Ended up in Soho with "frosty leaves" and Charlene.xx

Coming up...

Mass tree Hug Sun 11 March

It was a perfect day for a tree hug and at least 20 people turned out including the MP for Basildon, Angela Smith, David Wright (commissions east), Vin Harrop, LLisa Horner, Richard Taylor, Jack Gardner, Joe Bonfield, Thomas + Ellie Morley, Billy + Chloe Bonfield, Charlie Coe + another family with 5 children who should be appearing in tomorrow's (Tues 13) Echo. We focused our initial hugs - for the Echo photo opportunity - on the tree directly behind the cafe, but then ventured further afield, David having spied a lovely fat tree to get to grips with. Richard + jack then led us into the coppice behind the mini-lake to show us their favourite trees to hug. I reckon the trees loved it.

No Stepping on the Cracks Fri 9 March

Cracks in the Pavement Thursday 8 March

What did you find? Much of the paving in NOrwich town centre is very new, so little chance of any wildlife breaking through.King STreet however is a different story. I found a veritablelittle wildflower garden growing in the cracks between the pavement and the wall of a house.

Souvenir Items

Weare cracking on with the production of the Souvenir Items. Managed to producethe map + folder design yesterday. This morning between us Darren and I created the design for the bag. Darren also came up with a genius button badge, of which I will produce 100 extra so I can give some out at the Fri 16th launch. Zoe and I revisited the Nevendon Bushes this Tues - 6 March - to walk out the Ghost Walk and decide what illustrations to do. I've choisen a cpiuple of images for the postcard, and keep adding bits to the Travel Essay in my sleep!

Mon 5 March Car Free Day

Time toc hange some habits may be? I'm thinking of getting new bikes via the police auction site...and cycling with the kids from Norwich to the Lenswade Dinosaur PArk. Saturday's Guardian did a Cyling Guide with cycle routes etc...give me the urge to rush out to get bikes. ALl our last lot got stolen!

Mass Frisbee

No pictures for this one I'm afraid. It was rather a wet + windy day + not such a mass event!! However, the Northlands Cafe is now the proud owner of several bright pink frisbees, available for use by park goers.

Cloud Appreciation

I'm a day late - yesterday was "Cloud AppreciationDay" according to the Dairy - but any day is a good day for looking at cluds. And the wonderful website www.cloudappreciationsociety.org will help you identify what you see; or at least their book will - but the website is a lot of fun anyway. You can post your cloud pictures onto it, amongst a myriad other things.
